Should risk-shy managers in this weak economy say “no deal” to an untested change draining already limited funds?

Part of ICANN’s risk analysis should include the effect that a shift to unrestricted domain names will have upon the current list of 14 simple ASCII gTLD suffixes (of which .com, .org, and .net account for 91% of all gTLD registrations) and approximately 230 two-letter country code ccTLDs. Trademark owners have criticized ICANN’s process thus far for failing to provide safeguards or “rights protection mechanisms” to save brand names from malicious or fraudulent registration. (And, in the highly unlikely case you should stumble across a name that meets these qualifications and hasn’t been registered, by all means buy it!)

But what I’m trying to get across here is that Premium Domain Names, like all domain names, are indeed the product of wishful thinking. If you’re not buying it hoping it will appreciate ten thousand times in a year then you are purchasing it in hopes that it will somehow aid your business or organization. The important thing to realize is that nobody can guarantee you a premium name because for the most part it isn’t so simple a matter as feeding data into a computer and registering the result. Even if it were, most of us couldn’t afford the software for the search. So don’t believe anyone that tells you they can.

I think there is only one answer to the question posed by the title that will be true in a majority of cases: Money! Lots of Money. You either bought it on the domain aftermarket for big bucks-in which case you better hope you have a premium domain name-or somebody wants to buy it from you for big bucks. If neither happens to be the case, you might have a domain name that’s worth a lot to you, but regardless of how closely it adheres to some set of arbitrary rules, you don’t have a premium domain name.

I mentioned above that you should not purchase a hyphenated URL for your main site. For marketing purposes, however, there are sometimes legitimate reasons to do so. I also have the option of using the hyphenated versions for other marketing efforts, but I don’t recommend doing so unless you are fully aware of the potential ramifications.

Use Proper Redirects

When setting up multiple domains such as those mentioned above, it’s important that you set up each one properly. Setting up domains improperly can lead to duplicate site/content penalties on the search engines which will ultimately be bad for business.

The best method of setting up multiple URLs is to set up a 301 permanent redirect. The 301 redirect tells the search engine that the URL it is trying to access has been permanently moved to a new location, presumably your main URL. The cool thing is that when a visitor types in the redirecting URL they are automatically flipped to your main site.

Many websites employ on-page JavaScript or meta refresh redirects, or even worse, framed pages pulling in the main site. These methods are effective from the user standpoint but not from the search engine standpoint. The 301 redirect is generally the safest method of redirecting users.

To set-up a 301 redirect you’ll want to talk with your web host, as different servers require different methods if implementation. When redirecting multiple URLs there is a neat little trick that saves hosting fees that you’ll want to use.

Take one of the redirecting URLs and host it on the cheap. This is the URL that will be set up with the 301 redirect to your main URL. Take all your other URLs and park them to point to the URL above.

With this method, you pay for only one additional hosting account ($5 at the most) and all your URLs will automatically flip the visitor and the search engines to your main URL.

In marketing, every little bit can help. Even if a redirected domain name only results in one additional sale every few months, it may not be long until that one sale is a significant one. Whenever you think of a possible domain name that might be used to drive traffic away from your site, go grab it right away. If the domain is already purchased I recommend keeping an eye on it in case the owner forgets to renew it, in which case you can buy and hold on to it for your own benefit.

Dot RU is the ccTLD for newly reborn Russia. RU Center is the approved registrar for both SU and RU. Russian officialdom has been trying to get rid of Dot Su for the last decade at least. In 2001, for example they jacked-up the registration price of an SU extension to $15,000 American dollars. That, needless to say, dampened the enthusiasm of most potential buyers; but enthusiasts and sympathetic officials forced a change and within a year or so the price dropped to a hundred dollars. Today you can purchase one from RU Center for 600 rubles, between 20 and 25 dollars.

Growth in Dot SU has been slow. At the beginning of the millennium there were less than twenty-five thousand domain names; today there are close to eighty thousand, a pittance compared to sales of ccTLD’s of countries a fraction the size of Russia. The Netherlands for example, boast over three million sales of Dot NL; this in a country of less than twenty million.

While anyone can buy a Dot SU extension, ninety-two percent of the 80 thousand are reportedly in Russia. If that’s the case then there must be a lot of Russians with an interest in the English language. I ran a goodly number of domain name searches on common English words and a lot were taken; not all however, as I was able to find four letter words (not those kind!) that were available. Some of the words still available might even be valuable commercially later–if Dot SU survives. Remember, ICANN wants it gone so be careful before you grab your credit card!

Here they have registered the domain name icio.us, the us part is the top level domain that represents North America. A sub-domain of del has been created on their web server which completes the creation of a catchy web address.

Why not use the same principal to create your own web address, there are many top level domains to choose from, far too many to list here. As many of the less well known top level domains are not used there will be a lot more domain names to choose from. You can use this method to create a distinctive web address and become more memorable to your visitors.

Although the Mayor argued that the timing was too late and the new law did not apply, the courts did not agree.

Representing the 33,000 working class residents of Riviera Beach, The Institute for Justice argued that going forward with the use of eminent domain not only violated Florida’s new statute, but the constitution as well. There needed to be a precedence that would assure citizens that their homes could not be stripped away for the sake of personal greed, or in this case, a new upscale development.

Since the ruling, the Mayor and city leaders lost their bid for reelection.

Going forward, the citizens of Riviera Beach were optimistic about working with the new city officials in improving the process for municipal change, where businesses and home owners and developers could work together. Today, when you look at the town’s website, it is bright, user friendly with well advertised City Council Meetings. One can’t help but notice the section on the “Riviera Beach Community Redevelopment Agency,” with clearly displayed development initiatives.

In the meantime, the battered Viking Inlet Harbor Properties who had invested $50 million into planning and properties was forced to return to the drawing board. The next year they returned with a slimmed down proposal for redeveloping only 26 out of the original 400 acres. Using city owned property and investing an additional $30 million, Viking would manage the municipal marina and take over Bicentennial Park to create an outdoor waterfront destination complete with entertainment, restaurants and shops. The marina would be dredged and expanded to include more boat slips. The hotel and luxury condos would have to wait. Perhaps by initiating growth and improvements, new development would follow.

Although this little town was “done wrong” in the past, it appears its residents were being handed an olive branch. The question is, will they take it?

I mention the Netherlands’ country code Top-Level Domain extension, .NL, because in spite of the fact it is the oldest of the country code extensions, you don’t hear much about it and it is no sluggard. First administered in 1986 it is the fourth most popular after China’s .Cn, Germany’s .De and the United Kingdom’s .UK. There are at this time, almost three million registered domain names with the extension .Nl; not bad for a country of less than seventeen million people; but the Dutch have always been known for their business acumen.

I wonder what percentage of those domain names are in the national language, Dutch? I played around with a registration search engine and discovered that any English word that I might want is already taken. Oh, I found that firetruck.Nl hadn’t been registered; there’s a sure winner. Unsurprisingly most of the German words I input came back registered also except for “metallwaren” which is “hardware” in German. Since both the English word and the German were registered in .De (hardware.De recently sold for over $60,000.) I was surprised to see metallwaren still open in .Nl considering Germany’s proximity and the fact that Dutch is spoken in parts of Germany. My playing around is hardly scientific but I would guess there is still room to grow in this extension.

Dot TV is a great media name. It is said, that the two letters T & V are the most recognizable two letters in the world. You can go where people do not even speak English and people will recognize TV. ICANN, if it intended dot TV to not be available to everyone, could have easily made rules requiring the purchase of dot TV to be ONLY for citizens of Tuvalu – but ICANN chose not to. It is very hard to believe such an intellectual group (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), would allow a dot TV top level domain, without immediately knowing it would have a much broader appeal than to just the citizens of Tuvalu. Knowing the above, ICANN would have made the Tuvalu Island extension tev, or something equivalent. This is definite proof ICANN intended.TV to be used for the media and other prospective investors. The Tuvalu Islands are the 4th smallest country in the world, about 10 square miles, and a population of less than 15,000. It is indeed a stretch of the imagination to believe ICANN had the intention of only Tuvalu citizens owning the.TV extension. Dot TV would not have been very profitable as only a country tld and ICANN knows this. There are countries and other entities knocking down the door of ICANN to try and get their tld approved. Dot TV was approved first because of its very valuable television media appeal. And this media appeal is rapidly including the internet. ICANN would have also known dot TV’s would be marketed internationally to prospective domain name buyers. Registrars were allowed to sell.TV to anyone, splashed across their home page to entice ANY buyer. As of this writing, Wikipedia the worlds largest internet library, informs readers that dot TV is a tld that IS AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC and HAS VALUE AS A MEDIA TLD. And Wikipedia is only one of many. This shows there is not a serious effort to discourage buyers who are not citizens of Tuvalu. The country of Tuvalu received millions of dollars for releasing.TV to the public domain – so even they knew it was a hot television media domain name extension. This is evidence the cries of cybersquatting are exaggerated. People depend on the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers when they make decisions to purchase their top level domains. And serious decisions were made with the belief there would be no future repercussions, including loss of ownership. None of this is saying the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers is not admitting to knowing the above.

This being true, then ICANN has an ethical responsibility to continue the.tv tld. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers let this great extension be marketed to a vast public, so it has a responsibility to uphold it for the vast public.

Why all the Fuss?

The reason for all the fuss is that ICANN has stated in their internet rules that any country that ceases to exist will cause the tld from that country to cease. Well, then why was the tld so aggressively marketed to people all over the world?

GoDaddy, the worlds largest registrar, was one of the companies who aggressively sold.tv. Now, they have dropped it from their listed tlds for sale and helped devalue the extension by saying Tuvalu might sink in the ocean. In the meantime the customers who helped make them successful are the ones left to sink.

Registrars like GoDaddy get a huge amount of their profits from selling registered domain names. And the dot TV is one of the most expensive to purchase. A more fitting and ethical response would have been to first talk to ICANN and work out a continuation of dot TV regardless of what happens to Tuvalu. Officials may even purchase another island to keep their countries name and heritage alive – the world does want the best for the people of Tuvalu.

GoDaddy has a lot of Clout

Bob Parsons, GoDaddy C.E.O., is a huge success story and being number one in domain registrations would at least have gotten the ear of ICANN. It is still probably going to happen. Multi-million dollar television media companies have invested in.TV, along with many other investors. Other than what is ethically right, there is still a lot of money laying on the table. In number 5 of ICANN’s agreement states:

MODIFICATIONS TO AGREEMENT – You agree that we may: (1) revise the terms and conditions of this Agreement:

That is the only ethical thing to do – revise the Agreement to include all purchasers of the dot TV tld for past, present and the future – because this is how the tld was sold to domain name internet investors.

If you’re out to find the best deal on domain names and web hosting you will find several purveyors of these products offering you a free domain name with your hosting. Everybody wants a cheap domain name and inexpensive hosting. Do you really think the price of the domain isn’t taken into account with that package? Before you buy, see what the price of the domain would be without the package. If it’s substantially more than the going rate at other registrars you might want to take another look at the whole package. Maybe the deal is as good as it looks…and then again, maybe it isn’t.

If after you’ve taken a sharp pencil to the deal and it still looks good, keep one more thing in mind. You want to be sure that the domain name will be registered in your name and not in the name of the company or individual that is developing or hosting your website. Why? Because a domain name that was originally purchased for less than ten dollars can become extremely valuable when coupled with a website. It doesn’t matter what kind of a contract you have with the developer, if the domain name isn’t in your name when your business relationship with that developer goes south you will be sorry. There’s one more old saying to remember: “Possession is nine points of the law.” And you won’t be in possession.
