(And, in the highly unlikely case you should stumble across a name that meets these qualifications and hasn’t been registered, by all means buy it!)

But what I’m trying to get across here is that Premium Domain Names, like all domain names, are indeed the product of wishful thinking. If you’re not buying it hoping it will appreciate ten thousand times in a year then you are purchasing it in hopes that it will somehow aid your business or organization. Who might do such a thing? A disgruntled x-employee, a customer who had a bad experience or even a former spouse or partner. Setting up and hosting a website is relatively easy, and often bad press travels a lot further with a little effort than good press with a lot of effort.

There are some significant drawbacks from trying to capture all negative versions of your domain name. You’ll have to grab all hyphenated, non-hyphenated, plural, and misspelled variations. That can be quite a bit. Take that even a step further, you’ll want to buy the .net, .org, .info, .biz and .us (or your country code) variations. Don’t forget YourDomainSux.com or YourDomainReallySucks either.

Is it worth trying to get all those variations? You’ll have to decide. For some “any press is good press.” For others, not so much. In any case, someone registering a “sucks” version of your domain name is likely to create a legal battle that perhaps neither side wants to engage in.

Hyphenated Versions

I mentioned above that you should not purchase a hyphenated URL for your main site. For marketing purposes, however, there are sometimes legitimate reasons to do so. My business owns PolePositionMarketing.com and Pole-Position-Marketing.com. I purchased the hyphenated version simply to prevent a competitor from securing it and stealing my branding. I also have the option of using the hyphenated versions for other marketing efforts, but I don’t recommend doing so unless you are fully aware of the potential ramifications.

Use Proper Redirects

When setting up multiple domains such as those mentioned above, it’s important that you set up each one properly. Setting up domains improperly can lead to duplicate site/content penalties on the search engines which will ultimately be bad for business.

The best method of setting up multiple URLs is to set up a 301 permanent redirect. The 301 redirect tells the search engine that the URL it is trying to access has been permanently moved to a new location, presumably your main URL. The cool thing is that when a visitor types in the redirecting URL they are automatically flipped to your main site.

Many websites employ on-page JavaScript or meta refresh redirects, or even worse, framed pages pulling in the main site. These methods are effective from the user standpoint but not from the search engine standpoint. The 301 redirect is generally the safest method of redirecting users.

To set-up a 301 redirect you’ll want to talk with your web host, as different servers require different methods if implementation. When redirecting multiple URLs there is a neat little trick that saves hosting fees that you’ll want to use.

Take one of the redirecting URLs and host it on the cheap. This is the URL that will be set up with the 301 redirect to your main URL. Take all your other URLs and park them to point to the URL above.

With this method, you pay for only one additional hosting account ($5 at the most) and all your URLs will automatically flip the visitor and the search engines to your main URL.

In marketing, every little bit can help. Even if a redirected domain name only results in one additional sale every few months, it may not be long until that one sale is a significant one. Whenever you think of a possible domain name that might be used to drive traffic away from your site, go grab it right away. If the domain is already purchased I recommend keeping an eye on it in case the owner forgets to renew it, in which case you can buy and hold on to it for your own benefit.

I found it extremely frustrating that there are no decent instructions out there about how to transfer a domain you registered with Google (most likely when you signed up for a Blogger account) over to another Registrar. The first thing you will need to do is have an account at a registrar where you want your Google domain to be transferred to. I’ve been using GoDaddy.com forever, and I’ve never had any issues with them, so if I can highly recommend them for your domain registering needs. Normally it only costs $7.00 to transfer a domain name, and you get an additional year of registration for free.

Now that you have your account set up there, log in and go to the top “Domains” dropdown tab and select “Transfer Domains to GoDaddy”. Type the domain name you wish to transfer from Google in the box and select “Go”. If the domain name is available for transfer, click “Proceed to Checkout”. Continue through the checkout process and pay for the transfer. You will receive several emails from GD, one of which will contain transfer codes for your domain, so don’t trash these!

In the next step, you have to get into it with the nice folks over at Google. When you buy a domain name through the big “G”, your domain name is actually being hosted by Enom.com or GoDaddy.com (Yeah, go figure), but for some reason it’s extremely difficult to get access to your own domain name.

Write this password down, because you’re going to need it when you email Google for your “Authorization Code”. Send an email to the address you see on the screen above, it could be either of those addresses shown. Tell them you are the owner of http://www.YourDomain.com and you need the authorization code to transfer your domain to a new registrar. Write in the password show above also. This will be all they need to unlock your domain, and email the transfer code to you. It may take a few hours to a day to get the email.

Once you do, copy the Authorization Code and go back into your GoDaddy.com account and go to the “My Domains” tab where you can manage your domain names. In the upper left, you will see another 4 tabs that read “Domain Names” | “Buy/Sell” | “Tools” | “Help”. Roll over the “Domain Names” tab and select “Pending Transfers” from the dropdown list. You should now see the domain name you are trying to transfer. Click the checkbox next to the domain name and on the left portion of the page you will see an “Authorization” button. Roll over Authorize and select “Begin Transfer Authorization”. Find that email GoDaddy sent you before, which contains a Transfer ID & Security Code and enter those numbers into the appropriate boxes which should now be showing. Click “Next” and select that it is ok to transfer. Now enter the holy Google Authorization you were emailed. You should now be seeing a message that says “Accept Transfer at Current Registrar”. That’s it, it’s now out of your hands. Hopefully within the next 1-5 days, someone over at Google domains will press the button to finalize the transfer into your GoDaddy.com account. Once it’s been transferred, it will show in your “My Domains” section of your account, and you’re free to change DNS NameServers, forward it, or any of the other features.

Ok, you failed to renew your domain name on time. You had been expecting to hear from your registrar before it expired, but for some reason he didn’t contact you. The RAA (Registrar Accreditation Agreement) between ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) asks the Registrars to send out at least two notices as reminders before your domain expires. If you contact your Registrar and complain because he didn’t let you know it was expiring he will almost certainly tell you that he did try to contact you.

He will probably have some sort of digital documentation to prove it. You, on the other hand, don’t have any documentation one way or the other; after all, if your bookkeeping was that good you wouldn’t be in this mess in the first place.

But two hundred dollars does seem like a steep penalty for a little memory lapse. ICANN suggests a redemption fee of eighty dollars ($80), but like most of ICANN’s suggestions (including the 45 day auto-renewal grace period), the registrars seem to take them or leave them as they see fit. Some of the Registrars do go along with ICANN’s suggestion, and some charge a bit more, $100 or $160.

The highest redemption figure I was able to find without a lot of digging was $200. There is however, no reason to believe that the upper limit couldn’t go considerably above $200; in the economy’s current condition I would be willing to bet on it.

As ever the best advice is keep a sharp eye on your investment. Know when your renewal time arrives and don’t count on the tender mercies of the registrars.

Maximum length of a domain name is 67 characters only inclusive of top level domain name. Hyphen “-” cannot be the first or last character. Domain names are not case sensitive i.e. you can use ‘A’ or ‘a’ and both are equally treated.

A domain name has to be registered before it becomes available for use. Registration cannot be for a period less than one year or more than ten years. It takes another two or three days after registration for domain name to propagate through all servers of World Wide Web. ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is the organization which manages this DNS system. Details of any registered domain name (whois) can be searched at interNIC, ccTLD domains can be searched at uwhois.

Each domain name has an extension like.com,.org,.edu etc. know as Top Level Domain (TLD) or Generic Top Level Domain (gTLD). There is also another two character extension like.us,.uk,.in which is known as ccTLD or Country Code Top Level Domain.

Domain names are internally represented as a numeric value called IP addresses which are too difficult to learn or remember. The process of linking this numeric value into character string is called Domain Name System. This Domain Name system translates the name of your registered Domain Name or web site to its IP address.

Registering domain name does not mean you have a web-site or a space for uploading a web site. Registration is simply holding a name for your web site. In order to upload web site or create pages for your site you will need a hosting service which will provide you space for your web pages. Once you get a hosting service you can then point your Domain Name to that host. Your host will provide you with two or more numeric string called primary DNS (Domain Name Server) and secondary DNS which are to be used for the purpose of pointing your Domain Name towards your host. Your hosting service may or may not provide you site designing service.
