Hey all,

Just wanted to touch on domains here. Are you picking the right domain for your AdSense site/ebook/membership site/product, etc? If not, you know you could be in severe trouble!

A domain is usually one of the first things people pick when they are making a site or product. This is WRONG! Stop doing it already! Just because you thought of a great domain and it is available, doesn’t mean that someone else has the exact same idea and they are just waiting to take it out from under you.

The domain is the very first thing people see about your site. It is the link they click on, type in, digg, or stumbleupon. So make sure to give it a little love.

Some things you should always consider when it comes to picking the right domain are:

* Keyword rich domains
* Readability
* Potential Traffic

Your domain should always contain your main keyword for your site. AdSense sites and content driven sites should use this. If your site is about hiking backpacks, your domain should be hikingbackpacks.com.

If you’re going for branding, make sure to include branding in your domain as well. If people are looking for you via your brand, you need to make sure they can find everything about you.

If your brand is Pepsi, you would have pepsi.com. You could also enforce your brand with pepsicommercials.com which has your brand as well as the focal part of your site in the URL. And it is easy to remember.

Another thing you need is readability. If your domain is: mycooldomainthatisreallyhardtoread.com, no one is going to be able to decipher that. On the flip side, you can use hyphens, but that will make your customers have a really hard time typing your domain. Imagine trying to tell someone over the phone “type m y ‘hyphen’ c o o l hyphen…”. Not so effective.

Make your domain short an punchy. Like my domain is “BAM!”. Get a domain that is as short as possible. I don’t care if your product is “Shortening Really Long URL’s For Better Use On Twitter”, it shouldn’t be your domain name. Your domain needs to be something more like tweetsnip.com or twitsnip.com. 1 to 3 syllables is best.

The last thing you can do is see the potential traffic your domain gets. Not everyone knows about this. ICANN (don’t worry about what that means) has a “Create Grace Period” holding domains for 5 days before you are locked into having the domain for 1-5 years. Think of it as a car’s 72 buyer’s remorse rule.

If you are purchasing a domain for sale, you can do some traffic analysis before you go forward with your domain. If you see it gets a decent amount of traffic on it’s own for whatever reason, and that is one of your traffic strategies, then you are good. If not, it is ok, but keep it in mind in case you change your mind about the domain before the grace period is over.

All in all, don’t jump into the domain selecting process. Just like a great headline, it takes time to find the perfect one.

There is more to having a site, than just a well-designed set of graphics and effectively presented data. Before you can have your site posted online, you will need a web hosting service and a domain name? You may wonder, what is a domain? More commonly known as DNS, it is the system used to assign web server addresses. They can be considered the “word” equivalent to an IP address.

Until the names were created, the only way to get to a specific address would have been to enter a string of numbers. When answering the question, what is a domain, in a more in-depth manner, it is a web site address that includes a top, second and third level. They are organized right to left. The top-level names or those that are located to the far right side of the address are known as the domain. They are dot-com, dot-net, dot-gov, dot-edu and other similar formats. They are also the two letter country codes that some prefer, such as dot-us, dot-nz, etc.

The second or mid-level domains are in the middle, or directly to the left of the top-level domain. What is a domain at this level? It is the name that you wish your site to be called. Companies and non-profit organizations often use their names as the mid-level domain. The third level, located to the far left is usually the machine name, such as www. Each domain is separated by a period, often called a “dot.” The three levels are the most common structure of a web site address. However, there are many other levels, or sub-domains that can be used.

This is not uncommon when asking what is a domain and referring to an educational institution such as a college or university with many campus locations. The top domain is usually dot-edu. The second level domain is the campus location, often just a two letter state abbreviation. The third level is the three-letter university or college abbreviation and the fourth-level is the www. Department names can be added as another level. Once you have decided on your site name check with your web hosting company or domain name registrar. If the name you want is already taken, they can recommend one that is similar.

We all have ideas that come and go and as an entrepreneur, these ideas tend to come more often and they tend to stick around… You won’t find them leaving your brain as quickly as you would have hoped they would.

Since we have this innate characteristic of building new things and creating, it is only natural that we will eventually stumble across the next BIG idea. You know the kind I’m talking about… It’s not just something that comes up and you think, “Yeah, I could do that…” but it’s something that you think of that makes you think, “Wow! I NEED to do this!” When you get an idea like this, what is the first thing you do? Tell a friend? Tell a colleague perhaps? The first thing I recommend doing is registering an applicable domain name.

So, for those of you who don’t speak tech-talk, I am sure you are asking yourself what is a domain name? A domain name is simply where your website (when you create one) will “live.” It is the name of your website. For example, my website is www.bsetc.ca. That registered “name” is my domain name. I also own many other domain names which are being held for future use and for those BIG ideas I was talking about earlier.

When you create an idea and there is thought behind it, securing a domain name does one of two things. One, it creates a sense of responsibility. It will make you feel as though the project just isn’t an idea but something that is tangible and something that exists. This may help give you that drive to start and finish your projects. Two, it ensures that no one else will take your must-have name before you do.

When choosing a domain name, make sure you are choosing something that will be easy to remember for your visitors and something that means something to your business. For example, Ford Models’ domain name is http://www.fordmodels.com. It’s easy to remember and the business name is spelt out which makes you instantly recognize what it is for. In the case of my own website, even though http://www.bsetc.ca may not tell you what the website is right away, it is still the initials that I use when talking about my business in the short form. I often make reference to BSETC in that manner so people will begin to remember my website’s domain name.

Once you begin registering all of these domain names, make sure to keep track of them.
